Help Jah-I-Witness win the “I AM Conscious Music” Artist Contest – South Africa Tour

Peace and Blessings Beloved!!!

I come to you today because I really need you all’s support right now!!!  My good Sistren, and a very talented emcee herself, Azitiz gave me notice that she was going to be headlining the ““I AM Conscious Music” Tour which is scheduled to be in South Africa, and that If I wished to be a part of it, there’s a contest that I can enter for the opportunity to.  Upon learning of this, I immediately investigated what it would take to win such an honor, and I found that the winner would be determined by the number of votes he or she gets on the Facebook page for the contest.  It also stated that I was to write a blog and address four questions designed to shed light on my motivation for wanting to be a part of such a serious undertaking.

You all have supported me and my work currently and countless times in the past, and I am yet again asking for you all’s assistance in being chosen for this honor.  Those of you who know me personally, or have followed my career over the year, should have realized by now that I was born for an opportunity like this.  If you all see fit to give me the honor of representing you to our brothers and sisters in South Africa, I would be most ecstatic,  and I promise to give full details of the journey.

I am getting a very late start on this opportunity and I am very far behind, but I am confident that with you all’s help, I can make up the difference and win this not for me, but for us all.

Why conscious music is important, specifically in hip hop?

First off it is imparative that we realize that all music has consciousness. More specifically, music acts as a vehicle of consciousness, and us as artist/musicians are conduits of this consciousness. Now that we realize that all music has consciousness, it beckons us to ponder what consciousness is the artist trying to convey. Currently in Hip Hop music, we have:

  • Gangsta consciousness
  • Pimp consciousness / Ho Consciousness
  • Hustler consciousness
  • Killer consciousness
  • Drug consciousness / Drug abuser consciousness
  • as well as the consciousness of materialsim, sexism, egotism, and other destructive vibrations of being with all give strength to an overall consciousness of oppression.

The combined affect of these negative degrees of consciousness is what has stifled the overall consciousness of the artform we call Hip Hop, so much so that the music is often refered to as unconsious and in some cases even dead.

It is my firm belief that for many years the powers that be have worked in a clandestine manner to manipulate and control the artform known as Hip Hop, with the desire to control arguably the most powerful form of communication currently on the planet. It is my firm belief that they are fully aware of the transformative power of Hip Hop, and also how it is merely the latest manifestation of light to the world from a people who have a history of creating civilizations, as well as being a light and example to all nations. With the obvious cultural affect that Hip Hop has had on the global community’s consciousness, we have witnessed a strange phenomena of “art imitating life… imitating art…”. It amazes me how the entire globe has latched onto the actions of my peers and myself, both positive and negative, and have even gone as far as to live and die by this image. It is no wonder why the oppressor would seek to utilize this medium to spread his consciousness of oppression.

In realizing that negative forces with unlimited capitol seek to control the art form of Hip Hop and manipulate the mass conscious, it is crucial that great efforts are made on behalf of POSITIVENESS, UNITY, AND CULTURE by Hip Hop artist and those involved in the culture alike. Speaking on behalf of the hidden black genius that exist within the inner cities and hoods here in the West, it is very important to me that I handle my responsibility of correcting this global propaganda image personally. Working with inner city youth and other young up and coming artist, I have seen first hand the effects my music, which I use as a vehicle of education and healing consciousness, has had on them. The best way I can explain it is for the youth, it opened their eyes to new possibilities and avenues of positive expression in their lives, and also provided an escape from the hardships they face which are all to often glorified in the current state of Hip Hop music. As for my peers, I have seen the effect my music and stage show has had on them. I have noticed that many of my peers prior to meeting me, figured that if they closely followed the current status quo for rappers as opposed to offering substance, they would be better received and would prosper better. After seeing how well received my work is and being able to testify to the many, yet modest, successes I have gained as a result of my positive approach, I have noticed that the god consciousness that is delivered through my work begins to creep into theirs as time progresses. I liken it to a sort of POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE and I give thanks and praises that The Most High and The Ancestors find me worthy to communicate through.

How it makes you feel to be part of a movement that is being called, “the voice of the voiceless.”

As stated earlier, I have taken it upon myself to correct the global propaganda image of the inarticulate, violent, sex-crazed, immoral, unintelligent black man by replacing it with an image more in line with our ancient glory in an attempt to create future glory that will not fall victim to the mistakes of the past and can stand independent on its own. Not only do I consider this my life mission, I also consider it a birth right, as I am a second generation artist of God consciousness. My father was a pan-Africanist and reggae musician who groomed me along with many other powerful elders, to one day bare the torch and shed light on our strength, genius, and spirituality. So it is a huge understatement for me to say that I am honored to be involved with a movement that has taken on the noble responsibility of being “The Voice of The Voiceless.”

How do you plan to contribute to this movement?

In my own humble opinion, I am confident that:

  • the integrity of my work
  • the quality and uniqueness of my performance and presentation
  • my access to various media outlets and markets both domestic (US, major and minor) and abroad (SA, FR, ENG, JP, and several others)
  • my extensive experience in effective marketing on social networks along with my many strong and loyal supporters
  • my pre-existing South Africa links (both family and business)
  • my travel and touring experience (I got a passport with stamps…lol)
  • my experience as an educator and orator
  • my technical savvy
  • my spirit, soul, and livication to the cause

would greatly benefit the movement, the tour, each artist involved, and every beautiful individual we shall encounter. I am into the business of life changing experiences both having them and giving them and I am honored at even the chance to be a part of such an opportunity. Even if The Most High does not have my physical involvement in this undertaking, I will be committed to doing all I can to forward the movement, and that’s the kind of commitment I feel this type of movement requires.

How will your participation positively impact hip hop fans if you are the winner?

I don’t know if I can truly verbalize the magnitude of how my participation would positively impact hip hop fans if I was the winner; however, I can assure them that as always, I promise I will take them along with me through every step of the journey (potentially the journey of a lifetime). As with my previous travels and experiences, I have shared my findings and reasoning I’ve acquired as a result of having said experiences. As a communicator and unifier, sending a brother like me on such a fact finding mission and spiritual journey will give me a better overstanding of the issues we as a diaspora face, and as my way of repaying them for granting me this experience, I PROMISE to do my best to represent the issues they are really dealing with, and truly be a voice of the voiceless.

About the Author

Born the son of musician/activist, Olamina of Awareness Art Ensemble (A.A.E.), a very influential force in introducing African culture and reggae music to the Mid-Atlantic region, Jah-I’s musical roots run long and deep. In 2001, in the wake of the September 11th tragedy, Jah-I and a handful of live musicians formed the live hip hop unit called True Sound. True Sound captivated audiences with their funky blend of hip hop, ghetto rock, reggae and soul, which began to be described as “The True Sound Experience.” With Jah-I-Witness as the front man, True Sound blends the energy of a rock-n-roll show, with street savvy and politically charged lyrics, soulful vocals, and masterful musicianship. Alongside the brothers of True Sound, Jah-I has played many, notable venues in the mid-Atlantic region and has shared the stage with a number of nationally and internationally recognized acts and music legends; such as Busta Rhymes & The Flipmode Squad, The Wailers, Sugar Hill Gang, and Fishbone. As a solo artist, Jah-I has created a colorful sound that truly stands out from the grayness of the music industry. With the mic as his brush and beats as his canvas, Jah-I dips into his life experiences, emotions, and soul to paint sonic masterpieces. One such masterpiece, Stranger, was unveiled in 2005. Stranger, an eclectic mix of politically conscious rhymes, love ballads, and odes to hip hop proved to be an excellent showcase of Jah-I’s singing, rhyming, and production abilities. Stranger effectively blurred the lines between music genres, while simultaneously embodying the spirit of hip hop music and culture. Currently, Jah-I is busy promoting the release of his second solo effort The Struggle, The Love, The Glory (The SLG), which is a collection of new songs and collaborations with various artists and producers around the world. He is also actively working on the completion of an album for his new group, The Remnant Project, which is comprised of emcee/vocalist Range Da Messenga, lyrical mastermind Kinetic, and Philly-based producer St. Paul. Both releases should prove to be solid works of art and positive steps on the path of Jah-I’s musical journey.
